Zambia on Thursday admitted it was studying the possibility of building a pipeline for the transport of liquid fuels from the Port of Beira in Sofala province.
Currently, petroleum products are transported by tanker trucks, which, in addition to their high costs, run the risk of robbery and the occurrence of fires during the journey.
This intention to study the pipeline option was expressed to the Mozambican authorities by the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, who, as part of his state visit to Mozambique, visited the facilities at the Port of Beira to find out how they work.
The possibility of building a pipeline was taken up again by President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi during a business forum that brought Mozambican and Zambian businesspeople together in the city of Beira on Thursday.
On that occasion, President Nyusi said that Mozambique was committed to the rehabilitation of port infrastructure for the storage and transport of various products, including oil.
Nyusi explained that the purpose of the forum was to transform historical relations into a lever for the development of the two countries, umbilically connected by their geographical contiguity.
As such, he added, Mozambique acted as a logistics corridor for rail and road connections to the ports of Beira and Nacala.
Toured the Port of Beira and we’re impressed with state-of -the-art equipment & excellent services. Once đżđ˛ & đ˛đż collaborate to extend the railway connection and Dry Port facilities via #Nacala, cargo conveyance will enhance economic activity.#Zambia #Mozambique #StateVisit pic.twitter.com/BewboHmuHS

The opportunity of #Beira as a regional key access point, should be used to optimise trade & investments that help create jobs & improve livelihoods. @FNyusi #StateVisit pic.twitter.com/jakVcD6HY1â Hakainde Hichilema (@HHichilema) April 7, 2023
