Mozambique and Tanzania are designing new strategies to fight terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
This is one of the key points of the agenda for the 4th Session of the Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security Mozambique-Tanzania, a three-day event started in Maputo this Tuesday.
The meeting follows the signing of a cooperation agreement on defence during a recent official visit of the Tanzanian President Samia Hassan to Mozambique.
“This session has the thorny responsibility of providing security, tranquillity and public order, through the definition of realistic strategies to respond to terrorism”, said Casimiro Mueio, Permanent Secretary of the Mozambican of Defence Ministry.
“Also, the session will rovide answers for the challenges associated with border crossing, human and goods trafficking, as well as other transitional crimes”, he stressed.
According to Mueio, the meeting will pave the way to strengthen historic bilateral cooperation on defence between both countries to promote security, stability and well-being for the people of both nations.
He added that participants will also seek answers to boost the fight against terrorism that has been hampering free movement of goods and people in the main areas plagued by terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
“Terrorism affects safety, circulation of goods and the normal functioning of key services. Here we convey our sincere gratitude for the help provided by all countries in the region, including our neighbour Tanzania”, he said.
Mueio revealed that recommendations produced by technical discussions, among experts, will contribute to strengthen strategic cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
“We hope that the recommendations will be in line with the concerns of our nations and that their adoption will contribute to strengthen friendship and cooperation ties”, said the permanent secretary.
By strengthening relations between both countries, according to Mueio, cooperation will also materializes one of the key objectives being promoted by the leadership of southern African countries, with regards creation of bases for regional interconnection.
“Geographic contiguity between our countries imposes common challenges to establish, create, guarantee and maintain adequate conditions for the well-being of our populations”, he said.
For his part, Tanzania’s Secretary for Defence and Security Services, Faraji Mntepe, hopes that the meeting will produce concrete and feasible strategies for the eradication of terrorism.
“We will be working towards strengthening the economies of our people. However, we must first strive to restore peace and security to our people”, Mntepe said, recalling that Mozambique and Tanzania are historical partners.
The meeting takes place few days after Mozambican Defence Minister, Cristóvão Chume and his Tanzanian counterpart, Stergomena Tax, signed a cooperation agreement on defence and security.
