Mozambique and Switzerland have strengthened relations of cooperation and friendship, pointing out that the terrorism plaguing some parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado is an evil that must be exterminated urgently.
“In the context of the terrorism and suffering that in some districts of this province, the president of Switzerland has chosen to share awareness with the population”, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Thursday, after inaugurating a “Square of the Metical” (the national currency), in the town of Mueda.
Nyusi was accompanied by his Swiss counterpart, Alain Berset, who is on a three-day visit to Mozambique.
“Knowing that here in the area of Palma, Mocímboa, Nangade, and Miudumbe, there are acts of terrorism, the statesman of Switzerland is joining us so that we gain more strength”, Nyusi added.
According to the President, relations between Mozambique and Switzerland date back to the times of the National Liberation Struggle, in various social areas.
“Switzerland has been a friendly country since the times of the National Liberation Struggle”, said Nyusi, noting that “many Mozambicans studied with the support of the Swiss Mission (the Swiss Presbyterian Church”.
For his part, Alain Berset said “The relations between our countries go back a long way, but this is the first time that a president of Switzerland has come to Mozambique. It is a privilege to address the people of Mueda. Our countries will always continue together working for the improvement of the lives of the people.”
Speaking in the provincial capital, Pemba, Berset promised that Switzerland will continue supporting the demobilization, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) of former guerrillas of the country’s main opposition party, Renamo.
He said he was “very impressed” with the DDR. Switzerland, he continued, “will remain beside Mozambique in implementing this peace process, and making progress together”.
