Mozambique and Romania yesterday expressed interest in reactivating business cooperation in Maputo, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Cosmin Dinescu, announced following a meeting with the Executive Council of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA).
Dinescu said his country’s business interests with the Mozambican private sector covered many different areas, but were primarily focused on tourism, adding that it was imperative to reactivate the economic partnership between the two countries, which had been strong in the past.
“Romania was a strong presence in Mozambique in the 1980s, but then we had policy changes which distanced us from some of our traditional partners. We now want to re-establish these relations, especially in a context of Romania’s presence in the European Union,” he said.
Dinescu said that this first meeting was a demonstration of Romania’s interest in resuming relations with Mozambique, not only bilaterally but also in the economic and business areas.
“At the moment, our priority is to identify areas for investment, and Romanian investment in Mozambique will commence shortly,” he said.
For the CTA, Lucas Chachine described the meeting as interesting for the private sector, demonstrating as it had the interest of both parties in re-establishing business relations, and announced that a Mozambican business mission to Romania to jointly assess existing conditions and capacities and relaunch relations would be organised.
Romania was involved in the development of Mozambique’s agrarian sector in the late 1970s and early 1980s through its participation in the “400,000 Hectare Project”, which focused on the production of food for self-sufficiency and the development of cash crops in Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces.
