Mozambique: Government decrees two days of national mourning for cyclone victims
Portugal and Mozambique are studying training actions that could benefit Mozambican forces in the new programme of military cooperation between the two countries, the Portuguese Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMGFA) said on Thursday.
“We are working with the Mozambican authorities to develop new training actions” that promote increased operational performance in terms of Mozambique’s needs, Admiral António Silva Ribeiro said at the end of a two-day visit to Mozambique.
The visit to Maputo served to analyse from a technical point of view these possibilities of reinforcing Portuguese military cooperation in Mozambique.
The visit follows that of the Portuguese minister for defence, João Gomes Cravinho, in December, to prepare the next framework programme for military cooperation.
Mozambique and Portugal have had a defence cooperation agreement since 1988.
The current programme started in 2018 and ends in February, so a new agreement will be signed soon, CEMGFA said.
A technical team will remain in the Mozambican capital to prepare the programme.
Cravinho said in December, after meetings with the Mozambican authorities, that Portugal would support Mozambique in the logistical organisation and capacity building of the military to deal with rebel groups that have been carrying out armed attacks in Cabo Delgado province.
According to the Portuguese government, the training, to be carried out in Mozambique, will cover rapid intervention forces, special forces, marines and military in the area of tactical air control, with cyber defence, cartography, hydrography and defence industrial cooperation being defined as areas of specific interest.
“We are talking about a non-executive mission. What we are going to do is to support the Mozambican authorities so that they can exercise their sovereignty,” Cravinho stressed at the time.
