Mozambique and Portugal expressed, in Lisbon on Tuesday (05-03), optimism regarding the continuation of the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM-MOZ), which trains military personnel in the fight against terrorism.
Optimism in this regard was expressed at a working lunch between the Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, and her Portuguese counterpart, João Gomes Cravinho, at the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon.
According to the initial projection, EUTM-MOZ ends this year.
According to a source from the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in contact with AIM in Lisbon, the two ministers “exchanged views” on the continuity of the training mission, and Verónica Macamo thanked Portugal for its support in combating terrorism in the north of the country, as well for supporting economic and social development programs.
At a working lunch, Verónica Macamo spoke about the current “political, economic and security situation” in Mozambique, as well as the general elections scheduled for October 9th in the country.
Verónica Macamo was making a stop-over in Lisbon while returning from Turkey.
Continued support for EUTM-MOZ is extremely important for Mozambique, especially in light of the intensification of terrorist attacks that have recently forced more than 67,000 people to abandon their homes in Cabo Delgado.
Last week, the Mozambican government requested support in lethal equipment from the European Union (EU) to boost momentum in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
The request was expressed by the Mozambican Minister of Defence, Cristóvão Chume, at a press conference in Maputo after a meeting with a European Union Political and Security Committee (COPS) mission, called to evaluate the EUTM-MOZ program.
