Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias and his Malawian counterpart Ibrahim Matola, met in Maputo on Friday (16-12) to assess cooperation in the areas of energy and fuel.
At the meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, the government officials reviewed topics addressed at the last meeting between the presidents of Mozambique and Malawi.
“The level of implementation of the construction project for the High Voltage Energy Transmission Line for the Mozambique-Malawi (MOMA) Power Transmission Interconnection Project (for the development of a mini hydroelectric plant in Zambezia province), were reviewed, as well as support from Mozambique in facilitating the import and transport of liquid fuels to Malawi, which is currently done through the ports of Nacala and Beira,” Minister Carlos Zacarias said.
With regard to the MOMA project, after its launch in April of this year, progress has been made in the construction of infrastructure on two fronts, namely, in preparing the ground for the installation of the towers, construction of the line and the substation and in the manufacture and delivery of parts for the assembly of the towers, due to start in January, 2023 .
At the meeting, the parties expressed their satisfaction with the level of execution of the works, recommending the technical teams to continue to monitor compliance with the established deadlines.
For his part, the Malawian Minister of Energy said he considers Mozambique a brother country, which he hopes will continue to be a reliable source of energy. “We need energy, without it there is no life and we rely on Mozambique. I have to thank our two presidents for all the initiatives they have carried out in favour of both countries,” said Minister Matola.
After the meeting, the Malawian Minister of Energy, heading a delegation made up of representatives of his Ministry, of the Ministry of Transport, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), and advisors to the Malawian presidency, visited the Maputo Combined Cycle Plant and the fuel terminal in Maputo province.
