Mozambique and Malawi on Tuesday reactivated the joint Commission for Defence and Security, which had been inoperative for 12 years.
The commission is charged with guaranteeing matters related to security between the two countries, including the fight against organised crime, illegal immigration, terrorism and trafficking in people and drugs.
Speaking this Tuesday in Songo, at the end of the talks with his Malawian counterpart, Lazarus Chabwera, Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi said that regional social and economic integration necessarily involved peaceful coexistence between the two countries.
President Nyusi said that Chabwera’s visit opened a new era of cooperation.
He stressed that the Mozambican government has been introducing reforms – namely in the development corridors and in rail and port infrastructure – to facilitate customs clearance.
The energy sector was a focus of significant Malawian interest at the talks which took place on Tuesday afternoon.
