Mozambique may soon start manufacturing vaccines for several diseases that affect the Mozambican population and, in this way, contribute to improving people’s quality of life.
The information was shared yesterday, in Bali, by the country’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, at the end of the bilateral meeting between Mozambique and Indonesia.
Carlos Zacarias noted that, to this end, the two parties are in advanced negotiations not only for the local production of vaccines but also of some medicines, which could contribute to reducing the import of pharmaceuticals into Mozambique.
“In this context, the talks are advanced, however, we continue to work with the focal points of the areas to ensure that we materialise the agreements very quickly, not only in this area but in others,” Minister Zacarias told ‘Notícias’.
Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, stressed that his government’s goal is to develop generic medicines for public use, improve the quality of health services, establish domestic production of vaccines and promote medical and scientific research in partnership with renowned institutions in Mozambique.
The two ministers were unanimous in citing other areas of interest, such as transport, fishing and infrastructure
“Indonesia is also interested in investing in the fisheries sector, since [Mozambique] has a very advanced fishery sector,” said the Indonesian minister.
In the fisheries sector, the aim is to add value through the local processing of products, bringing greater benefits to coastal communities and fishermen.
This cooperation should also help the country combat illegal fishing and improve the skills of fishermen through training programmes in aquaculture and the blue economy.
