Mozambique and Eswatini plan to invest the equivalent of €40 million to construct a jointly owned water storage dam that will benefit communities in the border towns of both countries.
The infrastructure, named the Pingue Dam, will be built on Mozambican territory, benefiting the communities of Namaacha village in Maputo province in the south, while on the Eswatini side it will serve the communities of Lomahasha.
“More than just a document, the declaration of intent [for the construction of the dam] is a testament to the friendship between our countries, mutual trust, and shared vision for progress and posterity within the framework of the SADC [Southern African Development Community] and the principles of integrated water resources management,” said Mozambique’s Minister of Public Works and Housing, Fernando Rafael, following the formalisation of the understanding.
The future Pingue Dam is a project expected to have a storage capacity of 13 million cubic metres of water.
The agreement for the construction of the infrastructure was signed in Eswatini by the two governments, described as a milestone in the “healthy” diplomatic relations between the countries, which date back to 1976.
In August, Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo highlighted the importance of deepening relations with Eswatini, particularly in industry, transport, logistics, ports, and mineral and water resources.
The two countries also signed three legal instruments of cooperation to create further opportunities for sharing political, economic, and social information.
Among the instruments signed by the two states was a memorandum of cooperation on fuels and related products between Petróleos de Moçambique (Petromoc) and the National Petroleum Company of Eswatini, as well as an agreement enabling the exchange of expertise in air services.
