Indonesia's Pertamina terminates LNG purchase contract with Mozambique LNG
Mozambique and China signed in Beijing on Wednesday, during the state visit by President Filipe Nyusi, agreements on productive capacity and cooperation in hydrocarbons.
Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi told the journalists accompanying the visit that the agreement on productive capacity would lay down guidelines for the installation of Chinese industries in Mozambique, ensuring that they are useful for the country’s development plans.
He said the agreement on hydrocarbons will cover cooperation between Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).
The CNPC already has a 20 per cent stake in the enormous natural gas fields in Area Four of the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, where the operator is the Italian energy company, ENI.
Asked if any further hydrocarbon concessions for CNPC are on the cards, Baloi said this was not under current discussion, since the government is being cautious about leasing out the country’s resources. Other partners were also interested and such matters “must be carefully considered”.
Nyusi arrived in Beijing on Wednesday morning from the southern Chinese city of Nanjing. He was greeted at Beijing airport by Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, and then met briefly with the ambassadors from African Union member states.
On Wednesday afternoon, Nyusi was scheduled to hold official talks with his Chinese host and counterpart, Xi Jinping, after which agreements between the two countries would be signed.
