The recently created political party ANAMOLA (National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique), which is headed by Venâncio Mondlane, the most prominent opposition figure in the country, is demanding its inclusion in the “Inclusive National Dialogue.”
The agreement on the “Inclusive National Dialogue” was signed last March by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and nine political parties. The national public consultation process for the dialogue will begin next September.
In an eight-page letter, addressed to Chapo, ANAMOLA also demands Mondlane’s seat at the dialogue table, arguing that “his position as the second-most voted presidential candidate in the 2024 elections gives him legitimacy to participate in the process.”
The letter was also sent to the European Union (EU) and to the signatory parties to the dialogue. It was also sent to the civil society organizations chosen to manage the funds disbursed by the EU, namely: the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IDM) and the Civil Society Support Mechanism Foundation (MASC).
“ANAMOLA speaks for a significant segment of the Mozambican population and Mondlane has institutional recognition as a member of the Council of State, a status granted to the most voted candidates”, reads the document. The Council of State is a body that advises the President of the Republic, and Mondlane has a seat on it in his capacity as the runner-up in the 2024 presidential election.
The party also calls for an urgent legislative change to allow the inclusion of relevant parties at the dialogue, “even those without parliamentary seats.”
During its first Extraordinary Session over the last week, the ANAMOLA executive had expressed its willingness to participate in the dialogue, claiming that “the party’s participation in the process is one of the six points listed in the organization’s Activity and Action Plan for 2025 and 2026.”
Mondlane has already held two meetings with Chapo, and so it seems unlikely that the Chapo government will oppose bringing ANAMOLA into the dialogue.
