Mozambique analyses difficulties in disposing of agricultural surpluses

The precarious condition of some access roads in central and northern areas of Mozambique may hinder the flow of agricultural surpluses, a topic that will be debated at a meeting to be held in Mocuba, Zambezia province on 24 March, said the national director of Internal Commerce.

Zulmira Macamo, quoted by Mozambican news agency AIM said on Monday in Maputo that the roads in need of repair are mostly in the northern provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa and central Sofala, Zambezia, Manica and Tete provinces.

Agricultural production in Mozambique is expected to be higher in these provinces, with agricultural production of 3.3 million tonnes of grain and 500,000 tonnes of vegetables.

The official said that the ministries of Industry and Trade and of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources are examining what actions can be developed to transport agricultural products from the production areas.

The First Agricultural Marketing Forum and the Launch of the Agricultural Marketing Campaign will serve for the government and stakeholders of the agricultural marketing process to assess the greatest difficulties that are faced.

Over 400 people are expected to attend the meeting, including producers, surplus buyers, institutions involved in roads and agricultural marketing, such as the Grain Institute of Mozambique, the Mozambique Commodity Exchange and financial institutions.
