The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, appointed, this Tuesday, in a Presidential Order, Américo Julião Letela to the post of Attorney General of the Republic.
The appointment of the new Attorney General of the Republic by the Head of State follows the end of Beatriz Buchili’s term of office. Beatriz Buchili, was appointed Attorney General by then President Armando Guebuza in July 2014 replacing Augusto Paulino.
Américo Julião Letela served as director of the Central Office for the Fight against Organised and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) . He is a magistrate at the Public Prosecutor’s Office for over 20 years.
Américo Letela began his career at the Panda District Attorney’s Office, in Panda district, Inhambane province, as District Attorney. He then performed similar functions in the Vilanculos district, also in Inhambane province, and was later promoted to Provincial-level Attorney in Inhambane province. He was later transferred to Gaza Province.
Letela also served as Chief Provincial Prosecutor in Cabo Delgado and Tete provinces, where he was promoted to Deputy Attorney General and seconded to the High Court of Appeal in Maputo City.
In 2017, Américo Julião Letela was appointed by presidential order to the post of Deputy Attorney General. In this role, he was assigned, by resolution of the Higher Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (CSMMP), to the Specialized Department in the Criminal Area of the Attorney General’s Office.

Meanwhile, in another separate Presidential Order and upon proposal by the Superior Council of the Judiciary, the Head of State today appointed Maria de Fátima Fernandes Fonseca to the post of Judge Counsellor of the Supreme Court.
