Germany’s Ambassador to Mozambique Lothar Freischlader recently made a working visit to the province of Nampula with the purpose of meeting stakeholders and partners in various projects financed by the German government in the areas of good governance, professional education and development of the private and financial sectors.
Received in his office by the Governor of the province of Nampula, Manuel Rodrigues Alberto, Ambassador Freischlader highlighted the strong relations between the two countries and the contribution that Germany has made towards the development of the province of Nampula, and Mozambique in general.
“German Cooperation has strong bilateral relations with the province, with special attention to the areas of good financial governance, development of the private sector and the financial sector and professional education,” Ambassador Freischlader said. In the future, this commitment will be extended to include projects in the area of humanitarian support combined with capacity building for the displaced whose high number is a great challenge for the province.
Accompanied by his delegation, the ambassador visited the district of Nacala-a-Velha, where he met with the savings group Wiwanana Orera, founded in 2020 and made up of cashew nut producers. Members emphasised the importance and impact that participation in savings groups has for their socio-economic development. “Through savings, many of us here managed to pay for our children’s schooling, improved our homes and managed to buy seeds when the agricultural season started,” Wiwanana Orera members said.
During a visit to Access Bank in Nampula, where the theme was the establishment of banking agents, the importance of access to financial services and the improvement of financial education in rural areas, which also contributes to the empowerment of women, became clear.
The development of young people’s skills through vocational education is another component of German Cooperation activity visited by the delegation. Here, the highlight goes to a visit to the Technical Industrial Institute of Carapira, which has benefited from the support of the German Embassy’s Small Projects Fund, including for its rehabilitation after Cyclone Gombe.
Ambassador Freischlader also visited the Instituto Polivalente de Marrere (IPOMA), which offers training for builders, locksmiths and blacksmiths with the aim of integrating them into the job market through internships and the creation of their own businesses.
The possibility of creating self-employment through poultry production was the focus of the visit to two egg producers who work in collaboration with Ebenezer and Partner Worldwide. These institutions not only offer training, but also ensure access to the market, which allows producers to earn an income to improve their lives and expand their businesses.
Also on this visit, the diplomat visited the Municipality of Ilha de Moçambique, whose partnership with Germany through a technical cooperation project within the scope of good governance has already allowed the municipality to increase the collection of PPRA revenues, increasing the management capacity of public finances with a focus on efficiency, effectiveness and transparency, as well as strengthening the municipal assembly’s oversight capacity.
