Road traffic on the alternative bridge over the Save River has been interrupted since Friday after one of the pillars supporting the infrastructure collapsed as a result of the heavy rain falling in the region.
Rain has interrupted the refurbishment of the old Save bridge necessary for its reopening to traffic and will resume when conditions improve.
Should the old bridge be reopened to traffic, the maximum weight of goods vehicles will be limited to 35 tons.
The National Road Administration (ANE) has prepared a contingency plan to protect work on the bridge over the Save river, in the centre of the country, in light of the passage of tropical depression Eloise.
In a statement issued on Friday, the ANE stated that, among other measures, the plan would require the immediate stoppage of all work on the construction of the new bridge, and the evacuation of all workers, materials and equipment. Also announced was the creation of holding spaces to the north and south of the bridge for the transfer of cargo to lighter vehicles.
