The Directorate of the Sea and Fisheries of Maputo seized around 250 kilograms of various types of fish, whose exploitation has been banned since January, it said in a statement.
“In this operation, 198 kilograms of shrimp, 15 of dried shrimp, 10 of crab and 10 of fish were seized,” according to the statement that Lusa had access to.
Between 1 December and 17 February, the authorities visited 29 fishing centres, inspected 1,285 boats and 1,295 fishing gear.
As a result, 39 illegal fishing gear, 25 mangrove stakes were seized and destroyed, and 40 fines corresponding to 800,000 meticais (€11,000) were issued.
The nationwide ban which began on 1 January and will be lifted on 1 April, aims to allow the reproduction of shellfish, through responsible fishing.
In the framework of the protection of species, Maputo also banned the fishing of surface shrimp in the bay, to give time for reproduction and growth of the species.
The interruption of surface shrimp catching, that is, up to 15 metres deep, should last until 31 March.
Statistical data indicate that Mozambique moves annually between €70 million and €100 million in the fishing sector.
A large part of Mozambican fish is destined for EU markets, especially Portugal and Spain.
