Almost 200,000 homes in Mozambique have been connected to the national electricity grid during the first half of the year, according to government figures available to Lusa on Wednesday, which estimate that almost half of the general public is covered.
According to the economic and social balance of the implementation of the state budget from January to June, 194,767 new home connections to the National Grid and Isolated Systems were made during this period, bringing the national coverage rate to 49.4% of households, compared to 47.8% at the end of 2022 or 40.3% in 2021.
The Mozambican government has set a target of 57 % of households having access to the electricity grid by the end of the year – with a forecast of 495,000 new connections – coverage guaranteed by the state-owned Electricity of Mozambique (EDM), which contrasts with 34 % at the end of 2019.
At the end of last year, EDM operated a medium-voltage distribution network of 22,992 kilometres and a transmission network of 6,355 kilometres with 15,906 pylons.
The company’s profits increased by almost 150% in 2022, compared to the previous year, to 5,220 million meticais ( €75.3 million), according to the report and accounts of the state-owned electricity company previously reported by Lusa.
The number of EDM customers grew by 14% in 2022, compared to the previous year, to 2,936,751, also advancing the “expansion of the network and the intensification of new connections”, which allowed 356,640 more families “to benefit from electricity, exceeding the target set in the business plan by 11.5%”.
According to EDM, of the country’s 416 administrative posts, 318 are connected to the National Electricity Grid, which represents a coverage rate of 76 % throughout Mozambique.
