Muamudo Momade, one of the three individuals arrested in Pemba city a few days ago on suspicion of trafficking in cocaine, hanged himself yesterday in one of the high security cells of the Cabo Delgado provincial police command.
The fact was confirmed to Noticias by Sinésio Dias, head of the criminal investigation department, who reported that the man was found dead early on Wednesday morning, when police officers opened the cell where he was being detained.

The source said that the deceased had been agitated at the time of his arrest. “It seemed that he was under the influence of drugs, so he was taken from the cell where there were other detainees. In this other cell there was an aggressive man, and on Wednesday the two had a fight. So the officials took one of them out, and he stayed there, and this morning he was found dead,” he explained.
Muamudo Momade was arrested in the company of two other men accused of drug trafficking and other illegal activities, caught red-handed while removing cocaine from a residence in the Maringanha neighbourhood belonging, according to SERNIC, to a Mozambican named Osmany Yacub.
SERNIC spokesman Sumail Sabila said it was premature to say whether or not Osmany Yacub Was involved in cocaine trafficking. SERNIC had not yet determined the origin and destination of the drugs, he added, and only knew that they were transported to Maringanha by boat.
True or not, what is certain is that Insilimo Guame, another of the detainees, mentioned the Osmany Yacub to journalists, although contradicted by the now-deceased Muamudo Momade.
Lito Alberto, another detainee accused of belonging to the same gang, said: “As soon as I was hired by Mr Adora, I knew it was drugs, because they brought them in at night on a big boat that stopped off the coast. I transferred them to my boat. They promised to pay me 50,000 meticais.”
The seizure of 25 kilograms of cocaine comes two months after SERNIC arrested a local businessman named Minoz Hassan, in possession of about 180 kilograms of ephedrine, a substance used for the manufacture of hard drugs.
Sumail Sabila said thatthe businessman was still in custody, and the case proceeding through the legal procedures in the provincial public prosecutor’s office.
