Mozambique Airlines, is reviewing its regional connections plan to better adapt it to the current situation.
The national flag carrier had posited a plan covering all the countries of Southern Africa by 2017, but notes today that the plan was drawn in a different context to that which most countries, including Mozambique, are currently experiencing.
Chairman of the LAM Board of Directors António Pinto de Abreu says the plan was based on “very optimistic” expectations about the growth of both the national and regional economies.
“In the current situation, considering where Mozambique and other countries in the region are, we think that it is unreasonable to implement this plan,” de Abreu told ‘Notícias`, adding that LAM was trying to maximize its more attractive regional routes.
“For example, it is worth maximizing services to Harare and Tanzania, but the provision of services to Angola would be better served by a code-sharing agreement with (Angolan airline) TAAG,” he explained.
LAM recently announced that the “high volume” of debt contracted in recent years was constraining the company’s plans. The company recently suspended the purchase a new Boeing plane expected to arrive in October, the first of three planned for acquisition over the next three years.
