Air transport in Mozambique carried over 2.4 million passengers in 2024, up almost 25% on 2023, according to official data compiled by Lusa.
According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Mozambique (IACM), air transport in Mozambique handled a total of 2,445,240 passengers in 2024, and 81,636 aircraft movements, compared to 1,974,523 passengers in 2023. Passenger numbers are expected to grow by a further 11% this year, to just over 2.7 million.
The “improvements in airport conditions associated with the capacity of airports at current and potential tourist leisure destinations such as Vilanculos, Inhambane, Chimoio, Ponta do Ouro”, and the “increased efforts to reach higher-value markets and the procedures involved in obtaining a visa” by foreign tourists are factors identified by the IACM as behind the forecast growth in air traffic in Mozambique.
The aviation sector regulator estimates that, in 2027, air transport will move more than 2.9 million passengers in the country and 3.1 million the following year. Growth is also forecast in cargo handling, from 18,027 tonnes last year to more than 21,600 tonnes in 2027.
At the end of 2024, 88 aircraft were registered in Mozambique, by 14 commercial operators, and a total of 12 airports, 21 public aerodromes and 256 private aerodromes.
