The government of Mozambique aims to double birth registrations from around 450,000 to 900,000 yearly by 2020, the country’s ministry of justice said in a statement on Wednesday.
The government said it aims to arouse awareness among Mozambican communities for the importance of registering babies at birth.
Angola’s government recently launched a campaign to encourage children to be registered.
“We felt the need to have an orientating instrument to help reach desired results,” the note released on Wednesday reads.
Although the country has seen progress in the registration of children’s births, a great proportion of the population, especially children, are not registered.
This implies “a problem in the process of the state’s planning and provision of resources” and affects “the exercise of fundamental rights,” the statement added.
Only 48% of children in Angola are registered by their parents, according to official figures.
