The company Águas da Região Metropolitana de Maputo yesterday estimated at €3 million the losses resulting from the vandalisation of its infrastructure during post-election protests in Mozambique, a situation that it claims also compromises water supply.
“Incidents of destruction, including damage to stores, mains, electrical panels, fences and office materials, generated significant financial losses, totalling approximately 200 million meticais (around €3 million), up until the first fortnight of January 2025,” reads a press release from Águas da Região Metropolitana (AdRMM).
In the note, sent to the media this Thursday, AdRMM calls for the preservation of its infrastructures in order to ensure the distribution of water in the metropolitan region of Maputo and refers to the “serious impacts that the recent post-election crisis caused to the public water supply infrastructure”.
“The destruction directly compromises the quality and continuity of the drinking water supply, exposing communities to the risk of disease and delaying investments in projects to expand and rehabilitate the network,” the statement reads.
In view of the damage caused by the destruction, AdRMM also warned of delays in improving and expanding the network to provide water to more residents in the Greater Maputo area.
“The vandalisation of public property affects not only the functioning of infrastructure, but also public health and social development. Each act of preservation is an essential step towards ensuring quality drinking water for all and the progress of communities,” the AdRMM press release adds.
The post-election demonstrations in Mozambique, called by Venâncio Mondlane, who rejects the election results, have caused 314 deaths and resulted in more than 600 gunshot wounds since October 21, according to organizations on the ground, such as the electoral platform Decide, in addition to violent clashes with the police, looting and destruction of public and private property.
Daniel Chapo, presidential candidate supported by the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), was declared the winner of the elections and was sworn in as the fifth President of the Republic on January 15.
