Former glory of Mozambican basketball Afra Ndeve passed away yesterday after a prolonged illness.
As a player, Afra Ndeve wore the colours of Desportivo da Beira, Estrela Vermelha de Maputo, Costa do Sol and Maxaquene, and helped the Mozambique national team win a silver medal at Afrobasket Maputo in 1986.
A true women’s basketball legend of the 1980s, Afra Ndeve shone on the court.
Of medium height, she left an indelible mark on the national basketball team, joining names as Aurélia Manave, Esperança Sambo, Telma Manjate, Marta Monjane, Benilde Nhalivilo, Ramira Langa or Deizi Sitoi in a generation which personified the history of the sport in the country and showed the way to other ‘Samorais’.
For her achievements and triumphs at international level, Afra Ndeve earned, along with other colleagues, recognition of her life-time career from the Mozambican Basketball Federation (FMB) at a ceremony held in 2016.
Prior to her demise, Afra served as Internal Audit Committee chairperson for the Olympic Committee of Mozambique.
