The African Development Bank (AfDB) will disburse between three to four million US dollars to finance a feasibility study for the Techobanine railway and port project in Matutuíne district, Maputo province, thereby increasing the likelihood of the project’s implementation.
Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, has said that the three countries potentially involved in the project – Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe – have all carried out independent studies, but the aim now is to conduct more integrated and updated research.
The overarching aim is to ensure that all the steps required in a project of this magnitude are assiduously followed, which is why, Magala said, the participation of national and international players was being sought.

“It is in this context that we invite the AfDB, as Africa’s bank, where all African countries are shareholders, to lead the feasibility study process,” the Minister of Transport and Communications said.
Minister Magala added that the study should indicate measures to take so that the project does not negatively impact human life or biodiversity.
Furthermore, a definitive study will establish the value of the project, which may also be financed by the AfDB, as well as the governments involved and international partners.
“Hinterland countries are in great need of transporting goods to the world through Mozambique. There is a lot of pressure, not only from Mozambique, but also from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), for this dream to become a reality because it will leverage development across the region,” Minister Magala explained.
The project foresees the construction of a deep-water port over an area of 13,000 hectares, and of 1,200 kilometre-long railway line crossing Zimbabwe and connecting Mozambique to Botswana.
The Techobanine rail and port project, currently estimated to be worth around US$1.5 billion, will increase cargo handling capacity across the three countries.
