The African Development Bank will disburse US$46 million (€42 million) to support communities affected by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit Mozambique in 2019.
The support will benefit communities in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambézia and Tete in central Mozambique, as well as Nampula and Cabo Delegado in the north of the country, said Luís Mandlate, executive director of the Office for Reconstruction after Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, speaking to the media during a visit to Nhamatanda, in Sofala province.
The amount will support 40,000 families living from agriculture until 2023, prioritising producing families that are led by women.
The ambition of the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office Idai and Kenneth is to strengthen the livelihoods of families by assisting producers with irrigation kits, seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.
The distribution of the material began on Wednesday in Nhamatanda at an event attended by Sofala’s governor Lourenço Bulha.
“It is our expectation, with the delivery of these kits, to improve the communities’ income through an increase in production and productivity,” he said.
Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique in March 2019, causing 603 deaths and the city of Beira, one of the country’s main cities, was severely affected.
Cyclone Kenneth, which hit the north of the country in April of the same year, killed 45 people.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in recent memory in Mozambique, killing 714 people, including 648 victims of two cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) that struck Mozambique.
