Some customers of the company Água da Região Sul (AdRs), in the city of Xai-Xai, in Gaza, protested on Monday morning, in front of the facilities of that institution, against the bills charged for the provision of that service, as they considered them exorbitant.
“Noticias” witnessed the protests and, according to what it learned from some customers, in addition to the high prices, in some neighborhoods, the water has not been running for some time.
For Salvador, a resident of neighborhood two of Inhamissa, the invoices issued by the company do not reflect the amount of water consumed.
“I monitor the cubic meters of monthly consumption and make calculations, but when the bill arrives, the amount is high, reaching 2000 meticais, which is absurd. My household is made up of four people and we don’t use that much water, because we are aware that this can affect the household economy,” explained Salvador.
In addition to the clients who were contesting at the AdRS offices, “Notícias” was in the 24 neighborhood, one of the neighborhoods considered the most affected of the alleged arbitrary readings.
Rosa Miambo, a customer of AdRS, said she suspects that the exaggerated readings are the result of premeditated action by the company’s technicians and warns that if the situation is not reviewed, she will prohibit those from entering her home to take readings.
For AdRS, in Xai.Xai, the water tariff currently charged was defined by the Water Regulation Council, an entity that, according to the source, studies the dynamics of life, payment capacity and the challenges that water supply services face to guarantee minimum sustainability and continuity.
However, the Water Regulation Board denies any responsibility and clarifies that it is AdRs that sets the rates, and it is up to the latter to approve them.
