The Mozambican Ministry of Health this Monday [January 18] reported eight more Covid-19 deaths among hospitalised patients with the respiratory disease: seven in Maputo city and one in Maputo province. This brings the Covid-19 death toll in the county to 249.
However, these deaths did not all occur during the last 24 hours, as the press release points out: “the deaths announced today were declared between 13 and 18 January,” that is, between last week’s Wednesday and today. MISAU gives no explanation for the time gap between the dates on which the deaths were declared and the date on which the deaths are being reported.
According to the MISAU press release, the latest victims were five Mozambican women and three Mozambican men. One was aged between 25 and 34, three were aged between 45 and 54, two were aged between 55 and 64 and three were over 64 years of age.
The country today reported a further 895 new confirmed cases, bringing the cumulative to 27.446.
The city of Maputo recorded the largest number of newly diagnosed cases with 315 , corresponding to 35.2% of the total new cases reported today across the country,. It was followed by Maputo Province with 182 , corresponding to 20.3%. Zambezia province reported 126 new cases, Inhambane 119, Niassa 81, Sofala 52, Gaza 11. Manica eight, Tete one, and no newly diagnosed cases were reported in Cabo Delgado province.
“In the last 24 hours we registered a total of 43 new hospital admissions: six in Nampula province, one in Zambézia, six in Tete province, one in Sofala, five in Maputo province and 24 in Maputo City. In the same period of time, there were 23 hospital discharges across the country: “one in Nampula province, three in Tete province, one in Sofala, one in Inhambane province and 17 in Maputo city”.
There are currently 219 patients still in “hospitalisation centres of COVID-19 and other hospital units (79% of these patients located in the city of Maputo). ” MISAU adds.
Meanwhile, 273 more patients, all Mozambican, have fully recovered from the disease: 24 in Niassa, 12 in Zambezia, 92 in Gaza, 90 in Maputo province and 55 in Maputo city. This brings the number of recoveries in the country to 18,880 (68.8%).
Mozambique currently has 8.313 active cases of Covid-19, of which 5,276 are in the Greater Maputo area, with 3.875 in the city of Maputo and 1.401 in Maputo province.
