The Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN) calls for purging within Frelimo, the ruling party in Mozambique.
This concern was voiced in a message of greeting presented to Frelimo’s President, Filipe Nyusi, at the opening ceremony of its 12th Congress, a 5-day event underway in the town of Matola, southern province of Maputo.
“We must close and purge the ranks against infiltrators and intriguers who wear the party’s mantle and have been working to tarnish the image of Frelimo and its members, militants and sympathisers″, said ACLLN secretary-general Fernando Faustino.
According to Faustino, criticism and self-criticism should also be reinstated, and punish those who are out of line with Frelimo’s policies.
He urged all party militants and sympathisers to intensify unity, work and vigilance so that, in a steady and firm manner, ensure Frelimo’s organisational stability and adequate preparations “towards a resounding and convincing victory over the next elections”.
Faustino also complimented Filipe Nyusi, who also happens to be the incumbent Mozambican President “for his wise leadership and vision” and steering the country to the path of development.
“The President has shown in engaging and pragmatic ways how to drive the country while minimizing the negative impacts of adversities caused by the current and complex international economic situation″, he noted.
He also extended his support to the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) of Mozambique, Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as the veterans of the national liberation struggle.
The veterans, under the directions of Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces and “with bravery and tenacity, are giving hard blows to the terrorists who are fleeing their bases.”
As for the 12th Congress, he said that on the one hand it will be a moment of celebration and, on the other, a rich opportunity for the party to continue to revitalise the spirit of national unity, to make Frelimo increasingly stronger and winner and continue to govern the country over the next years.
‘We hope our 12th Congress to be marked by greater involvement and deep debates on structural and relevant issues for the organization of the party and debates that were fed by extensive studies of theses that formulate the master lines that should guide the direction of the Mozambican state and society,” he said.
Faustino added that the 12th Congress should bring increasingly assertive solutions for the development of the various sectors and for inclusion by taking advantage of the country’s economic potential.
