At least eight people died and another 13 were injured in a road accident in Mafambisse, about 50 kilometres from the city of Beira, on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident involved a minibus and a lorry. The minibus was carrying 21 people, five of whom, including the driver, lost their lives on the spot.
The minibus had left Beira for the Inchope intersection when, arriving in Muzimbite, according to traffic police, its left rear tire burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The minibus veered out of lane and collided head-on with a lorry approaching from the opposite direction.

This is the second serious accident on national roads in just four days. In the first, in Manhiça last Saturday night, 32 people died. In addition to these two serious accidents, others recorded in the provinces of Manica and Zambézia bring total fatalities to 40.
In the aftermath of last Saturday’s accident on Estrada Nacional Number One (EN1) in the administrative post of Maluana, four coffins containing the remains of victims are awaiting burial in the city of Beira.
Octávio Chicoco, spokesman for the State Representation Council in Sofala province, said that the first two coffins arrived by air on Tuesday and the others on Wednesday, with more expected in the next few days.
Members of the Council of State Representation Services have been instructed to visit bereaved families and provide support.
The Maluana road accident, involving a bus from Beira to Maputo, claimed the lives of 32 people.
Another serious accident on the EN6, in December of last year and also involving a mini-bus and a truck, killed 13 people in Inhamízua, Beira city.
