A collision on Saturday between a train and a truck carrying 40 tonnes of maize closed Mozambique’s main coal transport railway, local authorities announced on Sunday.
The crash took place in Malema, Nampula province.
The driver of the truck overtook vehicles queuing at a level crossing and, ignoring stop signs, proceeded to cross.
The passing coal train hit the vehicle, pushing it along the line and destroying it, but without causing injury to anyone.
According to district authorities, technical teams from the line concessionaire, Nacala Logistics, were on site yesterday trying to restore circulation.
The 900-kilometre line, designated Mozambique’s ‘northern logistics corridor’, connects the mines in Tete province to the port of Nacala on the Indian Ocean, from where the coal is exported, mainly to Asia.
