Mozambique: 98 arrested over disorder and vandalism – Notícias

Ninety-eight people have been arrested and are being prosecuted for acts of disorder and vandalism in the cities of Maputo and Matola, allegedly in protest against rises in the cost of living, Notícias reported on Saturday.
According to the same source, those charged threw sticks and stones at vehicles and passers-by and burned tires with the intention of obstructing access roads.
Leonel Muchina, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), said, according to ‘Noticias’, that the 82 people detained in the capital had 160 tires ready to be burned or to used creating obstacles aimed at hindering the movement of people and goods, including on the Maputo-KaTembe bridge.
In Matola, where 16 people were arrested , spokeswoman Carmínia Leite said that police at the Liberdade Police Station had detained four minors for throwing stones at vehicles, but they had been released after being sensitised to the undesirability of this type of behaviour.
Messages circulating on digital platforms calling for demonstrations on Thursday had inhibited many citizens from going about their usual daily routines, police spokespersons noted.
