At the end of 2023, Mozambique had 925 large companies in operation, a slight increase compared to the previous year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) to which Lusa had access today.
According to INE business activity figures, large companies – those with more than 100 employees or whose annual turnover exceeds 160 million meticais (€2.3 million) – were concentrated mainly in the city of Maputo (504) and in the province of Maputo (160), both in southern Mozambique.
The provinces of Niassa, in the north, and Inhambane, in the south, had the fewest large companies in Mozambique at the end of 2023, with just seven each.
Compared to 2022, which recorded 919 large companies, almost half of Mozambique’s provinces recorded an increase in the number of people working in large companies in 2023, with the province of Maputo recording the highest positive variation (5.5%), and Niassa (-23.6%), Tete (-15.2%), Cabo Delgado (-2.5%) and Zambézia (-0.1%) recording negative variations.
“In 2023, the number of people working in large companies was 222,459 people, an increase of 2.8% compared to 2022,” the report states.
The majority (30.8%) of the large companies operating in Mozambique at the end of 2023 were engaged in wholesale and retail trade or repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, followed by manufacturing industries (15.5%) and transport and storage (11.5%).
