An articulated truck supposedly transporting ferrochrome ore was seized at the Ressano Garcia border post in Maputo province, after it was found to be carrying 941 cases of various undeclared alcoholic beverages in its payload.
The seizure occurred after the vehicle was subjected to a non-intrusive scan, whose images raised suspicions. Tax Authority (AT) officers immediately took the vehicle to the physical examination sector, where it was discovered that, in addition to the ferrochrome ore, as declared, there were significant quantities of alcoholic beverages hidden inside the trailers, which furthermore did not have valid tax control seals.
Following the seizure of both the merchandise and the means of transport, procedures are now underway to hold the offenders accountable, as well to recover the revenue from the customs duties to which the merchandise is subject.
The AT has recently thwarted several attempts to smuggle alcoholic beverages using ore transport vehicles, a desperate strategy used in response to the daily noose-tightening consequent on the intensification of inspection actions by the institution.
