The Mozambican health authorities on Wednesday reported a further 87 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 75 recoveries.
According to a Wednesday press release from the Ministry of Health, 51 of the new cases were women and 36 were men. Their ages ranged from two to 81.
61 of the 87 cases (70.1 per cent) came from the southern four provinces – 23 from Inhambane, 21 from Maputo city, 10 from Maputo province and seven from Gaza. There were also 12 cases from Cabo Delgado, four from Nampula, four from Sofala, two from Tete, two from Zambezia, one from Niassa, and one from Manica.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,352,942 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 958 of them in the previous 24 hours. 871 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 87 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 228,404.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 10.61 per cent on Tuesday to 9.08 per cent on Wednesday.
One Covid-19 patient, from Gaza, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, and three new cases were admitted (two in Niassa and one in Inhambane). The number of people receiving medical care in the Covid-19 wards rose from eight on Tuesday to 10 on Wednesday. Five of these patients were in Maputo, two in Cabo Delgado, two in Niassa and one in Inhambane. None of them were in intensive care.
No further deaths from Covid-19 were reported on Wednesday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 2,213.
Of the 75 full recoveries from the disease, 58 were from Inhambane and 17 were from Maputo province. Hence the total number of recoveries rose to 225,701, which is 98.82 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 474 on Tuesday to 486 on Wednesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Gaza, 135; Inhambane, 106; Maputo city. 55; Cabo Delgado, 46; Maputo province, 45; Nampula, 34; Sofala, 27; Tete, 16; Zambezia, 14; Niassa, six; and Manica, two.
The Ministry also reported that in the previous 24 hours a further 8,451 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. 14,562,846 people are now fully vaccinated against the disease. This is 95.8 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
