The President of the Republic has bestowed the Medal for Veterans of the Liberation Struggle on 851 former combatants, an honour to be awarded during the 49th Independence Day ceremonies on Tuesday (25-06), the last to be presided over by Filipe Nyusi.
According to the Presidency of the Republic, the distinction is granted “in recognition of active participation in the struggle for the liberation of the Mozambican homeland, on the fronts of the armed or clandestine struggle”.
The honour also recognises “diplomatic combat and information and propaganda, the battle for the triumph of independence, as well as selfless effort aimed at valuing the achievements of national independence, Mozambicanity and national development”.
On Tuesday, Mozambique marks 49 years since independence on June 25, 1975, the central celebrations of which will take place in Maputo, presided over for the last time by the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, who, having reached the constitutional limit of two terms as president, can no longer run in the general elections of October 9.
The head of state has delegated powers to the secretaries of state of the City of Maputo and of all provinces in the country “to impose insignia of honorary titles and decorations on national citizens and legal entities”
