The Mozambican health authorities on Friday reported a further 85 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease and 48 recoveries.
According to a Friday press release from the Ministry of Health, among the new cases there were 45 men and 40 women. 80 were Mozambican citizens and five were foreigners (in line with normal practice, their nationalities were not disclosed). Their ages varied between three and 84.
21 of the new cases were from Gaza, 17 from Inhambane, 14 from Cabo Delgado, eight from Sofala, six from Zambezia, six from Maputo province and four from Niassa. There were also three cases from Tete, three from Maputo city, two from Nampula and one from Manica.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,359,094 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 801 of them in the previous 24 hours. 716 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 85 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 228,972.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) rose from 6.15 per cent on Thursday to 10.61 per cent on Friday.
No Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Friday, and no new cases were admitted. The number of patients receiving medical care in the Covid-19 wards remained unchanged at six on Friday – two in Maputo, two in Niassa, one in Cabo Delgado and one in Zambezia. None of these patients were in intensive care.
No further deaths were reported on Friday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remained 2,215.
The 48 people declared to have made a full recovery on Friday were all from Gaza province. The total number of recoveries rose to 226,319, which is 98.84 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 398 on Thursday to 434 on Friday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 81; Sofala, 71; Zambezia, 61; Inhambane, 59; Nampula, 52; Maputo city, 41; Gaza, 35; Maputo province, 12; Tete, 10; Niassa, nine; and Manica, three.
The Ministry also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, 3,844 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,587,400. This is 95.9 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
