A group of 82 Ethiopian citizens were detained in Manica, central Mozambique, on Sunday morning, for entering the country illegally, a police source told Lusa on Monday.
They had no documents and intended to “cross into Zimbabwe” before heading to South Africa.
“They were all without documents,” Manica police spokesman Mateus Mindú said, adding that the group was found in a cargo truck.
According to Mindú, people in the group were aged between 14 and 45, and intended to “cross to Zimbabwe”, which borders Manica province, and rom there head to South Africa.
Without giving any deadline, Mateus Mindú said that the process of repatriating the 82 Ethiopians was underway.
Mozambican authorities point out that crossing borders illegally is often carried out with the assistance of a guide or trafficker, who charges high amounts to transport foreigners in cargo vehicles, generally to South Africa.
