Eight thousand people in Maringue district, Sofala province, are facing hunger due to the drought caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon.
The majority of those affected are producers from the towns of Senga-Senga and Gumbalanzai, who saw their crops lost due to the lack of rain.
Maringue district had aimed to produce 194,000 tons of various crops this agricultural season, but only 74,000 tons resulted, according to Maringue administrator Maria Almija Pulsseira.
Pulsseira said the government was distributing seeds to farmers as a way to mitigate the impact of food shortages.
