Screen grab: Miramar
Mozambican authorities announced today the seizure in Dondo, in the centre of the country, of 750 tons of fluorite ore believed to have been illegally mined in the provinces of Sofala, Manica and Tete.
In a press release, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) indicates that the seizure was made in Sofala province, as the fluorite was being prepared for export. It is estimated that illegal export would have deprived the state of around five million meticais (€67,800) in income.
The government acknowledged in the same document “challenges” in monitoring the main exit points for mineral resources, pointing out that several inspection posts were vandalized during the post-election demonstrations.
The Mozambican authorities also announced that technical and laboratory assessments of the seized mineral are underway to determine its quality and chemical composition.
On March 31 of this year, the Mozambican government publicly considered the imposition of rules on the use of mineral and energy resources, indicating that they should benefit the country, and expressed interest in “freeing up” areas currently considered “idle”, for exploration.
“At this moment, there is no doubt for any Mozambican that Mozambique has resources of global importance and that the time has come to impose rules on their use, so that there is greater benefit for the country, for Mozambicans and their communities,” Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estêvão Pale, said at the time.
Mozambique currently has around 3,000 mineral and energy resource exploitation licenses in effect, according to updated government data.
