Mozambique: 32,000 families face food insecurity in centre of country
Panama disease has shut down a banana plant in Monapo, in the north of Mozambique, throwing 700 people out of work the local administrator told the ‘Notícias’ newspaper on Thursday.
Carlos Ramos said the company close about a year ago when the government of Mozambique banned the transportation of bananas because of Panama disease.
It the height of its production, Manuska Moçambique exported 1,400 tons of bananas a day to countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, Carlos Ramos said.
He is now trying to find a solution for the 700 workers who lost their jobs.
Panama disease is a fungal disease that attacks the roots of banana trees and destroys them.
