Mozambique: 65,000 stranded as bridge collapses in Mágoè, Tete – RM report

Communication between the district headquarters of Mágoè and the administrative posts of Mukumbura and Chintopo in Tete province have been interrupted since Sunday by the collapse of a bridge over the Caireze river on the Mphende-Mukumbura stretch of the road.

The bridge collapsed as a result of the torrential rain registered in this part of the country, leaving more than 65,000 inhabitants isolated, according to Administrator of Mágoè District, Tito Sitoe.

“All the river tributaries were already full, so surplus capacity was low, and the water overflowed and cut the causeway we had placed that connects the bridge. So, a breach opened up that you can’t even walk around, not even on a bicycle or a motorbike, and we are having difficulty seeing any solution right now,” Sitoe said.

Tete. Interrompida ligação rodoviária entre Mágoè, Mucumbura e Chinthopo

Em Tete, está interrompida, desde ontem, a comunicação rodoviária entre a sede distrital de Mágoè e os postos administrativos de Mucumbura e Chinthopo, devido ao desabamento da ponte sobre o rio Caireze, no troço Mphende-Mucumbura.

O desabamento da ponte resultou das chuvas torrenciais que se registam neste ponto do país, deixando mais de 65 mil habitantes isolados, segundo o Administrador do distrito de Mágoè, Tito Sitoe.

“Encheram-se todos esses afluentes, então a capacidade de encaixe foi fraca acabando a água por galgar a estrada e por conseguinte fazer corte na parte da terra batida que tínhamos colocado que liga a ponteca. Assim, abriu-se aquele lugar que nem dá para transitar, nem de bicicleta nem de motorizada e estamos numa situação difícil de dar solução neste preciso momento”, disse.
