Fifty illegal immigrants of Ethiopian origin were questioned by immigration authorities in Zumbo district, Tete province, last weekend.
The travellers, intercepted in Zambue administrative post, were being transported in an open box vehicle, whose driver is the presumed facilitator of the operation.
They crossed the border from the Republic of Zambia, allegedly intending to travel to neighbouring South Africa via Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Amélia Direito, spokeswoman for the Provincial Directorate of Migration, told Radio Mozambique on Tuesday that the group was being held at the police station in the Zumbo district headquarters town pending further procedures.
Amélia Direito also said that, last weekend, a further 62 citizens of various nationalities were repatriated to their countries of origin because they were in Mozambique illegally.
