Fifty containers of unprocessed timber recently logged in the central provinces of Mozambique have been seized by authorities in Dondo, Sofala, as presenting evidence of attempted illegal export.
A routine inspection involving forest and wildlife services and the environmental sector in Sofala, culminated in the seizure of 50 containers of black chacate and sandalwood at the yard of a Chinese company called Afanti Trading.
The authorities consider the cache evidence of the attempted export to China of unprocessed logs, which is banned in Mozambique under regulations designed to ensure the sustainability of forest resources and the promotion of local industrialisation and job creation.
The about 700 cubic metres of wood is thought to have been logged at various points in central Mozambique, and must have been transported many kilometres, and through several inspection checkpoints, on its way to the yard.
Company representatives protested that they did not intend to export the wood, but the company was fined 500,000 meticais nonetheless. The wood will revert to the state, as provided for by law, after which it will be sold at public auction.
