More than four thousand artisanal miners were forcibly removed from a gold mine in Nsengueredzi, in Chifunde District, Tete Province, TVM reports.
They are members of the ‘Samora Moisés Machel Cooperative of’ Nsengueredzi Artisanal Miners’ and were given 24 hours to leave the area , a member of the cooperative told TVM, “They came with their machine [and said] we want to put down all these houses here”, he says. in the report below.
Another artisanal miner tells TVM: “(…) now those whites already want to come in, and it was yesterday that they gave 24 hours for us to leave from here. Now, 24 hours with these things that we have here it’s being difficult”.
The government, in turn, confirms that this is a legally established cooperative and that it has over 4,000 members. It further confirms that the company holding the gold mine concession is also legally established but it recommends observance of the terms and conditions of the mining concession title.
“The company made a commitment so that, throughout the exercise of its mining activities, it could integrate that community so that it is part of the process. This is clear in the licence.” says a government representative, in statements to TVM. “It is also clear in the license that, if there are conflicts, they should be analysed at the district, provincial and national levels,” he adds..
“Our perspective is that the company can work and that there are gains for the company, there are gains for the community and there are gains for the state,” he says.
The government representative calls for common sense and dialogue between the miners’ cooperative and the mining concessionaire ‘Ouro Mulamuli’ a company with South African capitals, TVM reports.
