Niassa province hospitals have so far this year registered the death, from acute malnutrition, of around forty of women and children under five in their care, local health sector authorities say.
Pascoal Vilanculo, head of the public health department at the Provincial Health Directorate, explained that the deaths occurred among the cumulative 8,600 or so cases of acute malnutrition notified to health units in Niassa.
He added that the number of deaths from acute malnutrition recorded over the first nine months of this year exceeded by 35% the number for the same period last year.
The deaths occurred mostly in the districts of Lichinga, Maúa and Nipepe.
Of the approximately 8,600 cases of acute malnutrition reported by the provincial health authorities and which required medical follow-up, 5,989 recovered and 533 patients abandoned treatment.
