The National Directorate of Civil Identification (DIC) caught 44 people in the act of trying to get ID cards using forged birth certificates in the last week. The greatest number of cases occurred in Zambezia, with two in both Maputo province and Maputo city.
Speaking to the press, DIC spokesman Alberto Sumbana regretted that the public were not working with the institution by reporting the forgers. “We are mustering our resources in order to shut down the source of these documents,” Sumbana said.
Fifty cases of attempted duplication of birth registrations were also recorded in Zambezia and Gaza provinces in the week under review.
