The Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, promised on Friday that Mavalane General Hospital in Maputo city would get 320 new beds for coronavirus patients this week, in response to the increasing number of infections in the country, especially in Maputo.
The health minister said that three buildings would be retrofitted to respond to the pandemic, and a tent with a capacity for 200 beds erected.
Minister Tiago revealed that around 1,500 Mozambican health professionals had been affected by Covid-19, with at present nearly 400 active cases among health workers.
The minister called for strengthening Covid-19 prevention measures, “regardless of which variant “. The virus “does not transport itself” on its own “from one place to another”, he said, but rather “from one person to another”.
The minister was speaking to the press after a visit by President Filipe Nyusi to Maputo Central Hospital (HCM).
On Thursday, HCM director-general Mouzinho Saíde said that the temporary ‘transit’ ward set up there had been transformed into a ward for Covid-19 patients. It has 100 beds, but 65 are already occupied, and the other 35 could be filled at any time.
HCM has at least 375 health professional employees infected with the coronavirus, 110 of whom are doctors.
