The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported a further 31 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease and 63 recoveries.
According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, 21 of the new cases were women and ten were men. Six were children under the age of 15, including an infant less than a year old. The oldest case was 65 years old.
Seven of the cases were from Sofala, seven from Maputo city, and five from Zambezia. There were also three cases in Niassa, Tete and Sofala, two in Gaza and one in Maputo province. No cases were reported from Cabo Delgado, Nampula or Manica.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,374,117 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 749 of them in the previous 24 hours. 718 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 31 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 229,836.
One Covid-19 patient was discharged from hospital in Inhambane, and a new case was admitted in Maputo. The number of people undergoing medical treatment in the Covid-19 wards fell from eight on Wednesday to seven on Thursday. Four of these patients were in Maputo city, two were in Niassa, and one was in Zambezia. Two of these patients were in intensive care, receiving supplementary oxygen.
The Ministry release reported one death from Covid-19, a baby girl less than a year old, who died in Maputo city. This brought the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,218.
Of the 63 recoveries reported on Thursday, 24 were from Sofala, 15 from Maputo city, seven from Zambezia and two from Maputo province. The total number of recoveries now stands at 227,376, which is 98.93 per cent of all Covid-19 cases ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 273 on Wednesday to 241 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Zambezia, 68; Sofala, 66; Maputo city, 27; Niassa, 15; Inhambane, 13; Nampula, 12; Tete, 12; Gaza, 12; Cabo Delgado, 11; Maputo province, three; and Manica, two.
The Ministry release also reported that on Thursday a further 4,003 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,639,149, which is 96.3 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
