The number of people affected by t floods in Maputo city and province “rose to 30,000, which corresponds to 5,721 families,” the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) announced in an update published this Saturday (11-02),”At the moment, 4,286 houses are flooded, 13 schools are affected, among other damages,” it adds.
According to the same source, “the NGD has opened two more accommodation centres, bringing the total to five,” in view of the increase in the number of people affected .
So far, adds the INGD communique, search and rescue operations have enabled the rescue of 14,000 people, who were sent to the Accommodation Centres, where multisectoral teams are in place, at work to create conditions to give the victims a minimum of dignity.
The multisectoral teams have elements from health, for health care, and from Electicidade de Moçambique (EDM), for the provision of electricity.
Search and rescue operations continue, especially in the most affected areas, such as the district of Boane.
As of today, February 11, INGD will have five more boats, the chairperson of INGD Luísa Celma Meque announced, the comunique concludes.
